Imogen and Nahida

By Lydia  Siani

Imogen was a freelance journalist struggling to make a living in what she thought a ‘shallow’ world. Nahida was a twelve year old girl living in a poverty stricken shanty town in Bangladesh. Their lives crossed behind Nahidas family home / hut one humid afternoon.

While Imogen was puffing on a cigarette, the little girl came and sat next to her. She closed her eyes and said, “are you here to help us?”
“I am here to write an article that isn’t about Fashion or shoes,” she replied, “that wil make me some money and yes, urge people to help you,” she finished.
“Ok,” whispered Nahida, “thank you.”
Over the next half hour Imogen and Nahida realised how similar they both felt about their lives. They found comfort in each others voice.

Imogen went home and wrote her article. She sent it in and without hesitation it was published on the 5th page of ‘The Guardian’ under ‘special report’.
